Birds of Paradise — A Symbol of Tropical Beauty & Freedom
There’s something instantly captivating about the Bird of Paradise flower — its shape, its colors, the way it almost looks like it’s about to take flight. Nature showing off, in the best way.
For me, this felt like the perfect muse for a painting.
These bold tropical blooms aren’t just beautiful — they’re a symbol of freedom, creativity, and that wild, untamed energy of island life. Did you know a single plant can bloom up to 36 times a year? That’s a lot of flair.
Behind the Painting
In this two-piece set, I wanted to capture the rhythm of their colorful blossoms dancing across the canvas as well as the brightness and boldness of their fiery orange petals amidst the vivid blues of the sky and water and anchored with the soothing plethora of greens. I particularly love the range of texture and hues found in the greens…. Subtle hints of purples and pastel greens.
The painting emanates a brightness and boldness found in only a few of my paintings. As is usual for my oil paintings, no two strokes are alike. The eye swims through the surface, enjoying the flowing movement of the paint, which makes the canvas feel so alive.
This beautiful diptych was also painted with the Oceanfront Penthouse suite at Ocean Key in mind, where the hand painted canvas giclee print of the Birds Of Paradise adorns the Flamingo Royale Suite. Whether you see them as flowers or little birds mid-flight, these paintings bring a piece of the tropics into any space. A reminder to stay wild, stay colorful, and bloom where you are.
